Exam unit 2015
When i looked at the exam themes i loved the look of fantastic and strange because there was so many different themes into one. This was an opportunity to experiment with lots of different processes. I immediately gained interest and liked the way fantastic and strange is displayed. I was inspired by Laura Makabresku's images because they looked strange but they also made me curious, her work inspired me because it was complicated and made me want to know how it was made. The images i researched were all similar in the way that they were simple images which of been edited to make them look quite complexed.

Fantastic & strange Laura Makabresku was born and raised in a small town in in Poland. However whilst growing up she spent most at her grandparents place. whilst growing with her grandparents, Laura was in independent child as she was amused to play in forests alone as well as playing with cats. Laura also has other interests such as philosophy. Firstly Laura became interested in photography when she was in high school when she got her first camera. Laura is a self-taught person. she takes photographs intuitionally. She has started to treat her photographs as paintings. Laura wants her photographs "to be soft, full of light or darkness, fluid, and so you can feel the ways of her imagination". Ralph Meatyard Ralph referred himself as a "dedicated amateur". He was inspired by a set of masks with odd features. Ralph has a strange way of getting his subjects to reveal themselves. He put people in masks therefore they would become confident, like when we wear makeup we prepare ourselves by changing our features or making ourselves looks more presentable. Over a period of thirteen years Ralph persuaded his family and friends to wear his masks in front of the camera therefore he could complete his photography which inspired him. Ralph done his photography differently, he would chose the environment first then view particular lights to see if they were correct for that moment. Then when he felt it was accurate he would then tell his subjects where to place themselves, how to stand and which way to face. Ralph Meatyard inspires me because he believed in himself and made sure his photography was always accurate and also made sure his work was how he wanted to approach it. Mari Mahr This image shows a female blocking her face from being viewed using a flower, her posture is very formal and relaxed. This suggests she's apprehensive and old fashioned. This makes me feel sympathetic as her body language comes across as frightened, she is wearing a vintage flowery tea dress. The relevance of the flower is its big enough to cover her whole face. The dress and the flower really stand out because the background is very plain and simple. From my point of view the image is very organised because the girl is placed in the centre of the frame, and the main focus is on her dress and the flower as they are the most outstanding. I think the photographer was standing on the same level as the girl, from the cameras point of view it was taken from directly forward. Its obvious the image is not taken from a long distance, therefore the photographer was close to the girl. There is not a lot of detail in this image as its been specific the photographer has made the dress and the flower the most outstanding leaving the rest of the image plain. |
Jerry Uelsmann Jerry's photographs are unusual, they look like they are carefully composed double exposures. Because he is older I think the images have been done in film which makes them more interesting because they have been created carefully. They remind me of paintings from the 1980's rather then a photograph. The image looks dated because the ideas to me look old fashioned because i associate the images that i have seen in the older generations homes. His photographs all have nature or landscapes within them. All of his photographs are in black and white which I like because it shows the contrast. There are a variety of tones. This image looks old fashioned because the way the hands embrace the scene. |
Antonio Mora
All of the images are very similar, they are all made up of nature and body parts, which creates a contrast between the landscape and the human body. Some of the images which Antonia Mora has made, blend together, even though they are abstract they go together well. There is also contrast in the fact that they are all black and white and have various tones, such as greys, blacks and whites. They look unusual because of the strange contrast of the human face and the landscape. I think that these images.

My First Experiment
To begin with I had no ideas or suggestions to take pictures for fantastic and strange. I then improvised as much as i could and created strange images during school. I think majority pictures went well considering I had no ideas but then improvised whilst walking around school. Also there are not many things to picture fantastic or strange throughout in the school. In my perspective i could have improved by improvising more and made use of what I had therefore my images would be a lot more interesting. However I intended to chose a black and white theme for all pictures because it interests me more. All photographers I researched I was inspired by their black and white themed photographs black and white, which caught my attention and escalated to my work having the same theme.
My Second Experiment
I think I improved in this experiment compared to my first experiment as i had a better idea.
My Final Piece
Final Evaluation
I chose fantastic and strange because it immediately caught my attention. I want to make all my work equivalent to this theme as its relatable and something I enjoy. I like the fact that most images are black and white, I like the double exposure, in fact i based my exam piece on double exposure. I also like the compositions with the fact of them being abnormal and strange.
AO1: After looking at the photographer what i liked about their work was they were all black and white and double exposures.
