Pinhole Photography
What is pinhole photography? Pinhole photography is a form of photography which is not used with cameras. Replacing a lens, is a tiny hole. Through the hole light transfers through and forms a picture in the small camera. Pinhole cameras are small or large. They can be made with many things such as; Coke cans, gravy pots, boxes, cardboard tubes, plastic containers and more.
Inside every container that a pinhole camera is made with has to be black to stop light exposure. Using the pinhole camera to focus you have to make sure your at the correct distance from the subject.
History
The Chinese were the first people to discover pinhole photography from the fifth century BC. They discovered this from doing experiments light travels in straight lines. The philosopher Mo Ti also known as Mo Tsu to record the information of an inverted image with a pinhole or screen. Alhazen (Ibn Al-haithham) was the first person to invent a pinhole camera.
How to make a pinhole camera?
1. Chose any container which is best to use, such as gravy pot, a tube, a hot chocolate container or a box.
2.Ensure that your container is clean dry and light tight.
3. The inside of the container needs to be sprayed/painted black, including the cap; this is to prevent any light from entering.
4. Using a scalpel cut a small 1inch square hole inside the container. Place a piece of foil on the underside of the square hole and secure with black duct tape.
5. Puncture a pinhole in the centre of the foil this hole will act as your aperture and how much light enters the container.
6. Place a small piece of tape to cover the window to protect the pinhole; this will act as a shutter.
7. Load the paper in the dark room, and ensure that the shiny side of the paper is facing the shutter. The paper needs to be secured against the back of the container directly opposite the pinhole.
8. Ensure that the cap is firmly on and light tight before you leave the darkroom.
